Traumhaft: die Ankunft während des Sonnenaufgangs über Syrakus, Sizilien und über der MSC OPERA im Hintergrund.

A few cruise ships lie in front of Augusta. Can I persuade the captain to go through there in between?



Vor Augusta liegen einige Kreuzfahrtschiffe. Ob ich den Kapitän überreden kann, da zwischen durch zu fahren?

Ein bisschen näher hätte die MSC OPERA schon kommen dürfen.

Wir sind auf dem offenen Deck. Nur auf der Sonnenliege ist es gestattet seine Maske abzuziehen. Der Animator fordert jeden ohne aufgesetzte Maske auf, diese aufzusetzen, wenn man auf dem offenen Deck herumläuft.



We are on the open deck. You are only allowed to take off your mask on the sunbed. The animator asks anyone without a cover to put them on when walking around the open deck.

Very annoying: you cannot hear any announcements in the cabin. They want to protect the privacy of their guests. That is why the guests who actually want to know what is going on board have to walk to the aisle and listen outside. Otherwise, you do a lot of what the others do, like to broadcast the announcements over the television (often live camera channel or nautical chart).



Sehr ärgerlich: man kann keine Ansagen in der Kabine hören. Sie wollen die Privatsphäre ihrer Gäste schützen. Deswegen die Gäste, die eigentlich wissen wollen, was an Bord läuft, müssen zum Gang laufen und draußen zu hören. Sie machen ja sonst sehr viel, was auch die anderen machen: z. B. die Ansagen über den Fernseher (Oftmals Live-Kamera-Kanal oder Seekarte) zu verbreiten.

In der Fahrstuhlkabine sollen nur vier mitfahren. Aber eben die Steuerung erkennt nicht, dass bei einer Auslastung von vier die Kabine schon voll ist und hält unnötigerweise an, obwohl gar "kein Platz" wäre. Es gibt auch viele, die die Zahl vier missachten und einfach dazusteigen. Andererseits: wer will schon von Deck 4 (Ausgang) bis Deck 19 (ohne Deck 17) evtl. laufen?



Only four should ride in the elevator cabin. But the control unit does not recognize that the cabin is already complete at a capacity of four. So it stops unnecessarily, although there is "no space" at all. Many disregard the number four and just join it. On the other hand: who wants to walk from deck 4 (exit) to deck 19 (but no deck 17)?

No more signs are saying "Do not disturb!" and "Please clean up!" Because we always smell a bit of a drain/sanitizer, we got a so-called heating card so that the air conditioning/ventilation continues to run uninterrupted. You cannot make purchases or open doors with the heating card. Since an RFID tag is built into the card here, we cannot replace it with any other card. The combination of lights shows a card in the master slot (although we are not in the cabin) and that we do not want to be disturbed. But they did not choose any intuitive colors (e.g., green for "Please clean up!", So that sometimes misunderstandings arise.



Es gibt ja keine Schilder mehr mit "Bitte nicht stören!" und "Bitte saubermachen!". Weil es ja bei uns immer ein wenig nach Abfluss/Reinigungskarte riecht, haben wir eine sog. Heizkarte bekommen, damit die Klimaanlage/Lüftung ununterbrochen weiterläuft. Mit der Heizkarte kann man keinen Umsatz machen oder Türen öffnen. Da hier ein RFID-Tag in der Karte verbaut ist, können wir nicht diese durch eine andere beliebige Karte ersetzen. Die Lichterkombination zeigt an, dass eine Karte im Master-Schacht steckt (obwohl wir nicht in der Kabine sind) und wir nicht gestört werden wollen. Aber sie haben keine intuitive Farben gewählt (z. B. grün für "Bitte saubermachen!", so dass es manchmal zu Missverständnissen kommt.

Abends fehlt mal wieder eine Kleinigkeit...

Well - we actually get two surgical masks every evening for the next day. We prefer FFP2 covers for shore leave. Our concierge, therefore, still puts FFP2 masks with us, as he probably thinks that we feel safer with them. Very nice. But we would have enough FFP2 covers with us.



Nun - wir bekommen eigentlich jeden Abend zwei OP-Masken für den nächsten Tag. Wir ziehen aber für Landgänge FFP2-Masken vor. Unser Concierge legt uns daher noch FFP2-Masken dabei, da er wohl denkt, dass wir uns damit sicherer fühlen. Sehr nett. Wir hätten aber selbst genügend FFP2-Masken mit.

To my surprise: Syracuse, Italy, is the port of embarkation, and some of the handlings take place in the small hall under the mini tents.



Zu meiner Überraschung: Syrakus ist Nebeneinschiffungshafen und in der kleinen Halle unter den Mini-Zelten findet teilweise die Abfertigung statt.

Today we do not get a table in our usual area. But olive oil and grain bread are also brought here after us. Here, too, we experience a very charming service. Later we will introduce all of the colleagues in the restaurant together. Even they had cherry jam from Wilkin and Sons, especially for me. Bruno is in the mood for a muffin. But there comes a plate full of muffins. My omelet looks like a turtle that has a liver problem. We have a stowaway at the seat.



Heute bekommen wir keinen Tisch in unserem üblichen Bereich. Aber auch hierher werden Olivenöl und Körnerbrot uns hinterher gebracht. Auch hier erleben wir einen sehr charmanten Service. Später werden wir alle Kollegen des Restaurants gemeinsam noch vorstellen. Sogar extra für mich Kirsch-Marmelade von Wilkin and Sons. Bruno hat Lust auf einen Muffin. Es kommt aber ein Teller voller Muffins. Mein Omelette sieht aus wie eine Schildkröte, die ein Leberproblem hat. Einen blinden Passagagier haben wir am Platz.

Es raucht stark, als wir ankommen. Ist das etwa der Ätna? Ansonsten macht Syrakus einen tollen Eindruck. Bisher kannte ich nur Syracuse in New York.

Da unsere Tour erst mittags startet: wir testen weitere Produkte von Venchi aus: Als ich einen Milkshake mit laktosefreier Milch bestelle, löse ich eine Unruhe beim Personal aus: Laktosefreie Milch, Eis und Sahne? Sie machen sich Sorgen, dass es mir danach schlecht gehen könnte und sie wollen es mir nicht verkaufen. Ich erkläre, dass ich keine Probleme mit verarbeiteten Milchprodukten habe, nur mit der richtigen Milch. Ich soll nachmittags wiederkommen, damit sie sehen können, ob es mir wieder gut geht. Wäre jetzt keine Pandemie, hätte ich wohl beim Notar unterschreiben müssen, dass Venchi und MSC von der Haftung ausschließe. Aber der Milchshake mit dem Azteken-Sorbet mit 82% Kakaoanteil ist der Himmel auf Erden. Nie wieder Milkshake bei McDonald's. Nie wieder Frappuccino bei Starbucks. Von unserer Butlerin Angela von der MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 hören wir, dass sie mit der MSC SEASIDE Kiel wöchentlich anläuft. Wie bekomme ich eine Kühllogistikkette von der Ostsee in den Odenwald hin?

In der Top Sail Lounge merkt man schon, dass es leerer als sonst ist und man verteilt wird. Aber so Tische gegen die Wand? Mit Yacht Club Director Robert Balla tausche ich mich aus: auch von Princess - kennt auch alle, die ich auch kenne. Mit ihm spreche ich auch über das Auf und Ab in unserer Kabine und er macht es wieder gut und alles ist gut, damit man wieder bucht (Wir haben zwischenzeitlich MSC MAGNIFICA für Ende Oktober ab Venedig gebucht - zu Hause bleiben wäre teurer - und dank Sonnendeck Seereisen: Heckbalkonkabinen bei der Aus- und Einfahrt durch den Kanal von Guidecca) und diese Fahrt nicht vergisst. DESWEGEN: IMMER DIREKT DARÜBER SPRECHEN UND NICHT NACH HAUSE FAHREN, OHNE DASS MAN DENEN DIE CHANCE GIBT, ETWAS AN EINER UNBEFRIEDIGENDEN SITUATION ZU VERÄNDERN. SPEZIELL: KONKRET WERDEN! Ansonsten genieße ich meine Häppchen in der Top Sail Lounge.

MSC for me: Our excursion starts at 09:00 hrs and ends at 13:00 hrs. We are supposed to be in the Top Sail Lounge at noon. No time for lunch! So they prepare something for us on the way, and we get more "shoe bags" with club sandwiches, fruit, and water. We can even share it later with other guests who looked over jealously. We should always be measured fever at the beginning of each trip and again at the end. They measure a fever on board in the morning in the restaurant. So we check ourselves: we are well equipped. First, we walk through the city. Typical Italy. It was just as expected.



MSC for me: Unser Ausflug startet um 09:00 Uhr und endet um 13:00 Uhr. Tatsächlich sollen wir uns erst um 12:00 Uhr in der Top Sail Lounge einfinden. Keine Zeit für das Mittagessen! So richten sie für uns für unterwegs etwas her und wir erhalten weitere "Schuhbeutel" mit Club-Sandwiches, Obst und Wasser. Wir können es später sogar mit anderen Gästen teilen, die neidisch rüberguckten. Eigentlich sollten wir immer zum Beginn jedes Aufluges und am Ende wieder gemessen werden. Sie messen an Bord morgens im Restaurant Fieber. Wir messen also selbst: wir sind ja bestens ausgestattet. Zunächst laufen wir zu Fuß durch die Stadt. Typisch Italien. So wie wir es erwarten.

The dog drives Vespa. He manages to get on himself, but he does not wear a helmet!

Weiter laufen wir durch die Straßen von Syrakus. Unterwegs erfahren wir, dass Papyrus hier noch sehr populär ist und auch noch heute Verwendung findet.

At Gran Caffè del Duomo, we can take a break and go to the toilets and eat or drink something. On the recommendation of our guide, we should try the almond granita. We are in Sicily: a difference like a day and night! While we are drinking our espresso macchiato here, the other German group is in the cathedral. I assume that we will probably have to go on a boat together later. But to my amazement, when the group in front of us comes out of the cathedral, and we go in later, it is the only time that we see the other group. Our tour guides have made sure that we can always keep the necessary distances.



Bei Gran Caffè del Duomo dürfen wir eine Pause machen und die Toiletten aufsuchen und etwas essen oder trinken. Auf Empfehlung unseres Führers sollen wir unbedingt das Mandel-Granita probieren. Wir sind in Sizilien: ein Unterschied wie Tag und Nacht! Während wir hier unseren Espresso Macchiato trinken, ist die andere deutsche Gruppe im Dom. Ich gehe davon aus, dass wir vermutlich später gemeinsam auf ein Boot gehen müssen. Aber zu meinem Erstaunen, als die Gruppe vor uns aus dem Dom rauskommt und wir später reingehen, ist es das einzige Mal, dass wir die andere Gruppe sehen. Unsere Fremdenführer haben sehr darauf geachtet, dass wir immer die notwendigen Abstände einhalten können.

Der eigenständige Besuch eines einzigen Souvenirsgeschäftes, der ein Abkommen mit MSC hat, ist ebenfalls wohl erlaubt. Allerdings gibt es dort nichts Interessantes. Die Nachbarn gegenüber stellen sich kurzerhand auf die Seite des Souvenirsgeschäftes versuchen Kundschaft auf die andere Seite der Straße zu ziehen. Das ist mir allerdings zu riskant, dass ich nicht wieder an Bord darf, wenn ich jetzt gegenüber den Laden besuche.



An independent visit to a single souvenir shop that has an agreement with MSC is also probably allowed. However, there is nothing of interest there. The neighbors across the street unceremoniously move to the side of the souvenir shop and try to pull customers to the other side of the road. However, it is too risky for me not to be allowed on board again if I visit the shop across the street.

We move on across the street to the cathedral. Very nice to look at, even from outside. I learned somewhere: a cathedral always has at least two church towers. Our guide says no. It is a shame we cannot visit the church garden. The flowers look gorgeous!



Wir ziehen weiter gegenüber in den Dom. Schon von draußen sehr schön anzusehen. Irgendwo habe ich gelernt: ein Dom bzw. eine Kathedrale hätten immer mindestens zwei Kirchtürme. Das wird von unserem Fremdenführer verneint. Schade, dass wir den Garten der Kirche nicht besuchen können. Die Blumen sehen sehr schön aus!

In der Kirche achtet unser Fremdenführer darauf, dass wir immer ausreichend Abstand zu den anderen Gruppen vom Schiff. So fühlen wir uns nicht sehr in Gefahr, weil die Gruppen sich nie sehr nahe gekommen sind. Nur schnell aneinander vorbeigehuscht.



In the church, our tour guide makes sure that we are always at a sufficient distance from the other groups of the ship. So we do not feel very much in danger because the groups never got very close. We just hurried past each other.

We continue to walk to the waterfront to get to the boat. Very interesting: the Arethusa spring right next to the sea. Our guide Antonino can give us the feeling that the excursion could be carried out relatively safely. At the end of the tour in the evening, our legs hurt, and they turned a nice tan.



Wir laufen weiter zur Uferpromenade, um zum Boot zu gelangen. Sehr interessant: die Arethusa-Quelle direkt neben dem Meer. Unser Fremdenführer Antonino kann uns das Gefühl vermitteln, dass der Ausflug verhältnismäßig sicher durchgeführt werden konnte. Am Ende der Tour abends tun uns die Beine weh und sie sind schön braun geworden.

Unsere Gruppe bekommt ein eigenes Boot und wir müssen nicht ein Boot mit der anderen Gruppe teilen. Dadurch haben wir auch auf dem Boot sehr viel Platz. Wir fahren leider nicht mit dem "Love Boat" sondern mit Aquavision. Kapitän Carmelo sagt immer, wenn es sich lohnt auch mal durch den Glasboden zu gucken und legt hinterher eine Badestelle fest, bei dem die Interessenten gefahrlos kurz im Meer schwimmen gehen können.



Our group gets a boat of our own, and we do not have to share a boat with the other group. It also gives us a lot of space on the ship. First we have to get out of the place. The bridges are so low that the roof has to be folded down and everyone has to duck so we can get through. The other German group is also traveling in their own boat.



Zunächst müssen wir aus dem Ort raus. Die Brücken sind so niedrig, dass das Dach runtergeklappt werden muss und alle sich ducken müssen, damit wir durchkommen. Die andere deutsche Gruppe ist ebenfalls im eigenen Boot unterwegs.

Danach fahren auch in die verschiedenen Höhlen rein. Ja... ganz nett... aber ich würde deswegen nicht extra nach Syrakus reisen. Weil wir aber eh hier sind, ist das in Ordnung.



Then sailing into the various caves. Yes... nice... but I would not go to Syracuse, Italy, for that. But because we are here anyway, that is fine.

In front of the prison, the boats stop. So a few who feel like they can get into the water. We have our swimming trunks with us, but we stay on board and have a picnic!



Vor dem Gefängnis, halten die Boote, damit ein paar, die Lust haben, ins Wasser können. Wir haben zwar unsere Badehosen mit, aber wir bleiben an Bord und picknicken!

In Augusta, Italy, there are four MSC ships waiting to be deployed. I find out that Angela, whom we know from MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017, was called to work on the MSC SEAVIEW, which will then spend the season in the Baltic Sea from Kiel. We already know the ship: MSC SEAVIEW 2018.



In Augusta liegen vier MSC-Schiffe, die auf ihren Einsatz warten. Ich erfahre, dass Angela, die wir von der MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 kennen, zum Einsatz auf der MSC SEAVIEW gerufen wurde, die dann die Saison in der Ostsee ab Kiel verbringen soll. Wir kennen das Schiff ja schon: MSC SEAVIEW 2018.

Leider fahren wir nicht näher nach Augusta ran, sondern entfernen uns schnell. Wir sehen unser erstes MSC-Schiff: MSC MUSICA 2007. Die erste gemeinsame Kreuzfahrt mit meinem Vater, der ja vor kurzem verstorben ist, bevor wir im März auf die MSC GRANDIOSA gekommen wären.

Abends, gibt es einer meiner Lieblingsessen: Rindertartar. Ich probiere auch die Pasta. Aber der Fleischanteil ist doch zu minimalistisch. Am Schluss probiere ich die Petit Fours aus.



In the evening there is one of my favorite foods: beef tartare. I also try the pasta. But the meat content is too minimalistic. In the end, I try the petit fours.
