Tag/Day 2 auf der/on MSC SEASIDE in Genua/Genoa, Italy

Ein wunderschöner Sonnenaufgang über Ligurien startet den Tag. Ich habe für meine Verhältnisse gut und lange geschlafen.



A beautiful sunrise over Liguria starts the day. I slept well and long for my standards.

Although we are correctly registered: the system kicked me out. I cannot surf the onboard network. I have to be re-activated. I can see our trips on the calendar. I uploaded nice pictures of us during web check-in, but the system cannot process them. They take new ugly images of us. According to MSC for Me-App, we only have Bella Experience (the lowest tier of included services) in the Yacht Club. I will manage to book two tickets for the show myself tonight. Later, however, only one card appears in the system. And the show is sold out. The concierge cannot book anything either. Without further ado, they call a butler to take us to the theater and make sure that we both get in, but shortly before the entrance, his ticket appears on Bruno's MSC for Me-App.



Obwohl wir korrekt registriert sind: das System hat mich rausgeworfen. Ich kann nicht über das Bordnetz surfen. Ich muss neu freigeschaltet werden. Unsere Ausflüge kann ich im Kalender sehen. Ich habe schöne Bilder von uns beim Web Check-In hochgeladen, aber das System kann sie nicht verarbeiten. Von uns werden neue häßliche Bilder gemacht. Lt. MSC for Me-App haben wir nur Erlebniswelt Bella im Yacht Club. Ich schaffe es für heute Abend selbst zwei Tickets für die Show gebucht. Später taucht im System aber nur eine Karte auf. Und die Show ist ausverkauft. Auch der Concierge kann nichts mehr dazubuchen. Kurzerhand wird ein Butler mitgeschickt, der uns ins Theater bringen soll und dafür sorgen soll, dass wir beide reinkommen, aber kurz vor Einlass taucht auf Brunos MSC for Me-App doch noch seine Karte auf.

We do not find any opportunities to do laps on the outside deck. It is not a suitable option for Walk a Mile. And if only through stairs and between the guests of the self-service restaurant, who can sit outside. The glass floor does not make a trustworthy impression. We discover another bar outside that sells Venchi ice cream.



Auf dem Außendeck finden wir keine Möglichkeiten, Runden zu drehen. Keine gute Möglichkeit für Walk a Mile. Und wenn dann auch nur mit Treppe und zwischen den Gästen des SB-Restaurants durch, die draußen sitzen können. Der Glasfußboden macht keinen vertrauensweckenden Eindruck. Wir entdecken draußen noch eine weitere Bar, die Venchi Eis verkauft.

Irgendwie haben wir den Eindruck, dass wir in einer Besenkammer wohnen. Irgendwas steht immer vor unserer Kabine. Später erfahren wir, dass wohl die Besenkammern unterdimensioniert sind und die Servicewagen nicht mehr reinpassen.



Somehow we have the impression that we live in a janitor closet. There is always something in front of our cabin. Later we learn that the janitor closets are undersized and that the service trolleys no longer fit in.

We are getting two fresh masks today. Today we are missing the English program. We asked yesterday to receive the agenda in English. But today, there is only the German program.



Wir bekommen heute zwei frische Masken. Heute fehlt uns das englische Programm. Wir hatten gestern darum gebeten, dass wir die Programme in Englisch bekommen. Aber es gibt heute nur das deutsche Programm.

Einen schönen Sonnenuntergang erleben wir später nicht mehr.

Directly behind is NORWEGIAN STAR. For November 2021, we have planned a trip from Lisbon to the Azores or Madeira. We have fond memories of these places because of our journey on VEENDAM 2019 and MSC FANTASIA 2009. Since we are Platinum Plus members at NCL Latitudes, we are Diamond members due to the MSC Voyager Club Diamond status match program.



Direkt dahinter liegt die NORWEGIAN STAR. Für November 2021 haben wir eine Fahrt ab Lissabon zu den Azoren bzw. Madeira geplant. Wir haben diese Orte in sehr guter Erinnerung aufgrund unserer Fahrt auf der VEENDAM 2019 bzw. MSC FANTASIA 2009. Da wir ja bei NCL Latitudes Platinum Plus-Mitglieder sind, sind wir aufgrund des Status-Match-Programms von MSC Voyager Club Diamond Mitglieder.

Von unseren Reisen auf der EURODAM 2014 und KONINGSDAM 2016 kennen wir Hoteldirektor Don Habets. Auch Gladies von der NORWEGIAN SUN 2019. Beide müssten evtl. hier gerade auf der SCARLET LADY von Virgin Cruises drauf sein. Sie hatte ja bislang Pech, dass sie kommerziell noch nicht gestartet ist.



We know hotel director Don Habets from our trips to EURODAM 2014 and KONINGSDAM 2016. Also, Gladies from NORWEGIAN SUN 2019. Both of them might have to be here on the SCARLET LADY from Virgin Cruises. So far, she has had bad luck that she has not yet launched commercially.

I have been working for Yang Ming in Frankfurt since July 15, 2020. A "small" competitor from MSC's container division. Together with Hapag-Lloyd, ONE, and HMM, we travel to the Far East and across the Atlantic. But why do I not see a single container from us here? I will ask my colleagues in Genoa, Italy, later.



Seit 15.07.2020 arbeite ich ja für Yang Ming in Frankfurt. Ein "kleiner" Konkurrent von der Containersparte von MSC. Gemeinsam mit Hapag-Lloyd, ONE und HMM fahren wir gemeinsam nach Fernost und über den Atlantik. Aber warum sehe ich keinen einzigen Container von uns hier? Ich frage später meine Kollegen in Genua.

Um Zeit zu sparen, frühstücken wir oben an der Pool Bar.



To save time, we have breakfast at the pool bar upstairs.

We are in a bubble. I. e., we cannot go on excursions of our own. But only such, we booked with MSC in advance. For us, it is going to the Aquarium. We have never been here before. I am curious about the bubble. We get group number 1 and wait in the Top Sail Lounge half an hour before the start to be led out. Unfortunately, it is like this: we are handed over very late, and so all good places on the ferry to the Aquarium are already gone. The announcements are only available in Italian. We get two cards. We are taken aside, and we are told in English when we need to be where. We are instructed that under no circumstances should we speak to a dealer on the way to the entrance to the Aquarium or come into contact with other people. We are told that we are allowed to move independently in the Aquarium and that we can also visit the café or shop. On the short water transfer, we learn that a water connection Navebus is offered in Genoa, Italy: I have to remember the next time, and there are also whale watching trips. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to eat with Eataly. We were here after the MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017. What a shame!



Wir sind ja in einer Bubble unterwegs. D. h. keine eigenen Ausflüge. Sondern nur gebuchte. Ich habe sie vorab gebucht. Für uns geht es ins Aquarium. Hier sind wir noch nie gewesen. Ich bin mal auf den Bubble gespannt. Wir bekommen die Gruppe Nummer 1 und warten in der Top Sail Lounge eine halbe Stunde vor Start darauf, dass wir hinausgeführt werden. Leider ist das so: wir werden ganz spät übergeben und so sind alle guten Plätze auf der Fähre zum Aquarium schon weg. Die Ansagen gibt es nur auf Italienisch. Wir bekommen zwei Karten. Wir werden beiseite genommen und uns erklärt man in Englisch, wann wir wo sein müssen. Wir werden angewiesen, dass wir keinesfalls bis zum Eingang zum Aquarium einen Händler unterwegs ansprechen sollen oder mit anderen Menschen in Kontakt treten sollen. Uns wird noch erklärt, dass wir im Aquarium uns frei bewegen dürfen und auch das Café bzw. den Shop aufsuchen dürfen. Auf dem kurzen Wassertransfer lernen wir noch, dass es in Genua eine Wasserverbindung Navebus gibt: muss ich mir für das nächste Mal merken und es gibt auch Walbeobachtungsfahrten. Leider dürfen wir nicht bei Eataly essen. Hier waren damals nach der MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017. Schade!

When our group arrives, general admission is stopped, and we have to take a temperature before entering. Here we are even allowed to take "embarkation photos". And even redo them at the end if we do not like them. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to go to Café Chantal. I would have loved to see if we can meet our Marseille, France, taxi driver Chantal, who we know from our trips on NORWEGIAN EPIC 2012, MSC PREZIOSA 2013, MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017, MSC SEASIDE 2018.



Als unsere Gruppe ankommt, wird der allgemeine Einlass gestoppt und wir müssen zunächst Fiebermessen, bevor wir reindürfen. Hier dürfen wir sogar "Einschiffungsfotos" machen. Und sogar sie am Schluss neu machen, wenn sie uns nicht gefallen. Ins Café Chantal dürfen wir leider nicht. Dort hätte ich gerne nachgesehen, ob wir unsere Marseiller Taxifahrerin Chantal treffen, die wir von unseren Reisen auf der NORWEGIAN EPIC 2012, MSC PREZIOSA 2013, MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017, MSC SEASIDE 2018 kennen.

Die Abteilungen sind toll aufbereitet und wir können viel erleben. Leider ist direkt beim Eingang ein erster Flaschenhals, bei dem sich alle Besucher stauen. So habe ich doch bedenken wegen der Menschenmengen, die sich hier begegnen. Wir gehen daher schnell in die 2. Abteilung und da haben wir dann mehr oder minder unsere Ruhe.



The departments are well prepared, and we can experience a lot. Unfortunately, there is the first bottleneck right at the entrance, where all visitors jam. So I have concerns about the crowds that meet here. So we quickly go to the 2nd department and there we have more or less our peace.

After our stay in the Falkland Islands, while traveling on NORWEGIAN SUN 2019, I am enthusiastic about penguins.



Nach unserem Aufenthalt auf den Falkland-Inseln während der Reise auf der NORWEGIAN SUN 2019, bin ich von Pinguinen begeistert.

Mittendrin ist ein Café und wir machen hier eine Pause. Außengastronomie ist zugelassen. So genießen wir draußen einen Kaffee. Es ist wie früher auf der Transitautobahn durch die DDR. An den Raststätten konnte man früher Freunde und Familie treffen und gemeinsam essen. Damals saß die Stasi dabei und jetzt sitzen aber unsere Begleiter, die ein wenig darauf Acht geben, dass es nicht zu eng wird. Direkt davor ist einer von zwei Shops. Aber es ist der kleinere. Leider findet sich kein Hinweis, dass am Ende des Rundgangs noch ein sehr großer Laden folgt, in dem es sehr leer ist. Schade. Einen kleinen Pinguin muss ich für meine Disney-Cruise-Tasche kaufen, die ich auf der DISNEY DREAM 2014 oder DISNEY DREAM 2015 gekauft habe.



In the middle is a café and we take a break here. Outdoor catering is permitted. So we enjoy a coffee outside. It is like before on the transit highway through East Germany, GDR. In the past, you could meet friends and family at rest stops and eat together. At that time, the Stasi (East German State Security Authorities) was there, and now our companions are sitting there, who take a little bit of care that it does not get too tight. Right in front of it is one of two shops. But it is the smaller ones. Unfortunately, there is no indication that a huge shop follows at the end of the tour, in which it is empty. Too bad. I have to buy a little penguin for my Disney Cruise bag of DISNEY DREAM 2014 or DISNEY DREAM 2015.

It is a shame: back then, it did not work out at the CELEBRITY EQUINOX 2010 with the stingray swimming on the Cayman Islands. So I finally see rays up close.



Schade: damals hat es auf der CELEBRITY EQUINOX 2010 mit dem Rochenschwimmen auf den Kaimann-Inseln ja nicht geklappt. So sehe ich endlich mal Rochen aus der Nähe.

Ganz toll ist die Abteilung mit den Delfinen.

We continue. A picture with Spongebob. I did not succeed at the NORWEGIAN EPIC 2010 at the time. And we watch the moray eels being fed.

Eine besonders faszinierende Abteilung: Quallen.



A particularly fascinating department: jellyfish.

Back on board, we will have lunch at the pool bar again. However, it will also be the last time we will eat here. The problem with this cruise: there is probably no psychological support for the crew on board. 24/7 onboard without going ashore, and without a break on a piazza and a cup of espresso, and an undisturbed video call with the family. Perhaps that would help to bridge a low point and recharge your batteries. Here we witness that nothing works anymore because it is more important to resolve conflicts in front of the guests openly. But there is nobody up here to intervene. And I will not be able to change the situation itself. It is hard for me to tell the crew that they all have to behave happily from now on. I do not have that much chocolate with me. A complaint would also be of no use. We prefer to eat the rest of the journey down in the restaurant. Everyone there is nice and friendly. Besides, nothing is freshly prepared anymore. In the past, at MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017, there was always only one sample plate, and then they freshly prepared it. But they also cook something on request: pasta à la minute. But only Italian guests who specifically ask for it get that.



Zurück an Bord essen wir mittags wieder an der Pool Bar. Es ist allerdings auch das letzte Mal, dass wir hier essen. Das Problem dieser Kreuzfahrt: es fehlt wohl eine psychologische Betreuung der Crew an Bord. 24/7 an Bord ohne Landgang - ohne Pause auf einer Piazza und einer Tasse Espresso und ein ungestörtes Videotelefonat mit der Familie. Das würde vielleicht helfen, mal einen Tiefpunkt zu überbrücken und neue Energie zu laden. Hier werden wir einfach Zeuge, dass nichts mehr läuft, weil es wichtiger ist, offen Konflikte vor den Gästen auszutragen. Es ist aber hier oben niemand da, der eingreift. Und ich werde an der Situation selbst nichts ändern können. Ich kann der Crew ja schlecht sagen, dass sie sich ab jetzt sofort alle fröhlich verhalten müssen. Soviel Schokolade habe ich nicht mit. Eine Beschwerde würde auch nichts bringen. Den Rest der Fahrt essen wir dann lieber unten im Restaurant. Dort sind alle nett und freundlich. Außerdem wird ja nichts mehr frisch zubereitet. Früher bei der MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 stand immer nur ein Musterteller da und dann wurde es frisch zubereitet. Sie kochen aber auch etwas auf Wunsch: Pasta à-la-minute. Aber das bekommen nur italienische Gäste, die gezielt danach fragen.

Auf dem Weg zurück zur Kabine sehe ich, wie ein Crew-Mitglied im Schutzanzug aus einer Nachbarkabine kommt. Hier kleben jetzt gelbe Punkte. Deswegen wurden eben unser Butler und unsere Kabinenstewards abgezogen, um uns zu schützen. Die Gäste müssen bis Genua an Bord bleiben und werden dann dort in ein Quarantäne-Hotel überführt. Daher: meine Hoffnung, dass wir unseren Urlaub im Yacht Club auf Kosten von MSC verlängern können, falls wir positiv getestet werden, würde sich nicht erfüllen. So erfahren wir: Quarantäne wird in Genua an Land verbracht.



On the way back to the cabin, I see a crew member in a protective suit come out of a neighboring stateroom. Yellow dots are now stuck here. That's why our butler and cabin stewards were withdrawn to protect us. The guests have to stay on board until Genoa, Italy, and then transferred to a quarantined hotel. Therefore, my hope to extend our vacation at the Yacht Club at MSC's expense if we test positive would not come true. So we find out: Quarantine is brought ashore in Genoa, Italy.

But we have a pack of 25 with self-tests.

Die Infektionsgefahr im Aquarium und auf dem Boot zwischen dem Cruise Terminal und Aquarium empfinde ich als größer.



I feel the risk of infection in the Aquarium and on the boat between the cruise terminal and the Aquarium is higher.

We never saw our neighbors, and our contacts with the isolated crew members the day before were minimal.



Unsere Nachbarn haben wir ja nie gesehen und unsere Kontakte am Vortag zu den isolierten Crew-Mitgliedern waren minimal.

Unsere Tests heute und in den nächsten Tagen sind immer negativ. So fühlen wir uns sicherer. Nachträglich können wir eine Infektion nicht verhindern. Nur wir können im Falle eines positiven Testes weitere Kontakte ausschließen und geordnet unseren Rückzug vom Bordleben antreten. Zum Glück sinkt in Italien die Inzidenz von Tag zu Tag. Wir haben schönes Wetter und halten uns viel im freien auf und i.d.R. halten wir uns an die Maskenpflicht an Bord und an Land. Deswegen: solange es legal möglich ist, würde ich sofort wieder mitfahren. NCL verlangt von uns ja, dass wir dann bei Antritt vollständig geimpft sind.



Our tests today and in the next few days are always negative. That way, we feel safer. We cannot prevent infection retrospectively. Only we can rule out further contacts in the event of a positive test and begin our withdrawal from life on board in an orderly manner. Fortunately, in Italy, the incidence is dropping down day by day. We have excellent weather and spend a lot of time outdoors, and we usually adhere to the mask requirement on board and ashore. Therefore: as long as it is legally possible, I would go again immediately. NCL requires us to be fully vaccinated when we start.

Not all drinks are complimentary in the Yacht Club. A few fine wines also cost a little extra. Cigars also cost extra. I treat myself to a Mojito Zero. A cocktail called Jewel of the Sea - Whether Royal Caribbean would have caused trouble if they named it JEWEL OF THE SEAS 2007. We were on the ship once.



Nicht alle Getränke sind im Yacht Club kostenlos. Ein paar edle Tropfen kosten auch noch etwas extra. Auch Zigarren kosten extra. Ich gönne mir einen Mojito Zero. Es gibt einen Cocktail mit dem Namen Jewel of the Sea - Ob Royal Caribbean Ärger gemacht hätte, wenn sie ihn JEWEL OF THE SEAS 2007 genannt hätten. Einmal waren wir ja auf dem Schiff.

Für heute war ich ja eigentlich mit meinem ersten Butler zur High Teatime verabredet. Leider ist kein Butler da, der die High Teatime zubereiten kann. Der diensthabende Lounge Butler I Wayan bietet uns aber an, etwas spontan zusammenzustellen. Unser erster Butler hatte erwähnt, dass alles auf Etagieren serviert wird, so wie wir es von der MSC MAGNIFICA 2017 kennen, aber hier erfahren wir, dass wegen Covid-19 die Etagieren nicht eingesetzt werden.



For today I had an appointment with my first butler for high tea time. Unfortunately, no butler can prepare the high tea time. The lounge butler on duty, I Wayan, offers us to put something together spontaneously. Our first butler had mentioned that everything is served on floors, as we know it from MSC MAGNIFICA 2017, but here we learn that the tier-plates are not used due to Covid-19.

It is a shame: my favorite toy does not work! On MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017, I thought it was great that we, as Yacht Club guests, could control the elevator with priority: we were first dropped before the elevator drops the other guests in the elevator. Unfortunately, that does not work here because the elevator on the MSC SEASIDE is controlled differently here. The priority for Yacht Club guests should only work with the next update. Otherwise, I think the elevators are excellent at fighting idiots who always push "up" and "down" simultaneously, even if they only want to go in one direction.



Sehr schade: mein Lieblingsspielzeug funktioniert nicht!. Auf der MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 fand ich das klasse, dass wir als Yacht Club Gäste den Fahrstuhl mit Vorrang steuern konnten: wir wurden zunächst abgesetzt, bevor der Fahrstuhl die weiteren Gäste im Fahrstuhl absetzt. Das geht hier leider nicht, weil hier der Fahrstuhl auf der MSC SEASIDE anders gesteuert wird. Die Priorität für Yacht Club-Gäste soll erst mit dem nächsten Update funktionieren. Ansonsten finde ich die Fahrstühle sehr gut im Kampf gegen Idioten, die immer gleichzeitig "nach oben" und "nach unten" drücken, auch wenn sie eigentlich nur in eine Richung wollen.

Als ich die Bilder auf Facebook zeige, kommen tatsächlich Nachfragen, was die Taschen kosten.

Ganz kurz geht es in den Bereich des SB-Restaurants rein, weil wir den Eingang in das Schiff vom Promenadendeck nicht finden.



We go into the self-service restaurant area very briefly because we cannot find the entrance to the ship from the promenade deck.

We see the free drinks on offer.



Dabei sehen wir das kostenlose Getränkeangebot.

Wir bitten darum, dass wir mal andere Brotsorten bekommen, wie Foccacia. Wir bekommen auch Baguette und dunklere Brotsorten. Beim Abendessen finde ich irgendwie nichts passendes. Die Karten sind oft sehr fischlastig. Zwei Fischgänge und dafür gar kein Fleischgang unter den Hauptgängen ist "normal". So bekomme ich eine klare Hühnersuppe mit sehr vielen Hühnerstückchen von der Kinderkarte! Die Suppe ist echt gut! Damit ich nicht zu schnell satt werde, verzichte ich auf die Nudeln in der Suppe. Unsere Kellner merken sich das und prompt bekomme ich das nächste Mal auch die Suppe wieder ohne Pasta. Die Käseplatte am Schluss ist enttäuschend. Damals auf der MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 gab es noch tolle Honigsorten zu dem Käse. Jetzt ist es eine ziemlich trockene Angelegenheit.



We ask that we get other types of bread, such as Foccacia. We also get baguettes and darker varieties of bread. Somehow I cannot find anything suitable for dinner. The cards are often very fish-heavy. Two fish courses and no meat course under the main courses is "normal". So I get a clear chicken soup with a lot of chicken pieces from the children's menu! The soup is delicious! So that I don't get full too quickly, I skip the noodles in the soup. Our waiters remember that, and the next time I will get the soup again without pasta. The cheese platter at the end is disappointing. Back then, on MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017, there were still great types of honey to go with the cheese. Now it is a pretty dry affair.

During the day, we also had a look around the alternative dining restaurant area. We are less interested in fusion Asian cuisine. But a visit to Butcher's Cut and Ocean Cay are planned.



Tagsüber haben wir uns auch mal im Zuzahlrestaurant-Bereich umgesehen. Die Fusion-Asienküche interessiert uns weniger. Aber ein Besuch im Butcher's Cut und im Ocean Cay sind eingeplant.

Abends geht es zur Show "Fly". Es ist eine von drei Produktionsshows, die an zwei Mal an zwei Abenden gespielt werden, so dass möglichst viele Gäste sie sehen können. Nach dem wir von den Shows auf der MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 durchgehend begeistert waren und auch Shows gerne mehrmals gesehen hätten, werden wir hier jedoch wie in einer Zeitmaschinen zurück auf die MSC MUSICA 2007 katapultiert. Es ist leider wieder "Kindergeburtstag" à la MSC: d. h. Gesang mit Varieté für den international-europäischen Geschmack. Unseren Tänzer, der uns den Weg gestern zur Seenotrettungsübung gelotst hat, sehen wir heute auf der Bühne. Dass nicht wie bei MSC PREZIOSA 2013 DO-RE-MI aufgetreten ist, hat dafür gesorgt, dass ich nicht wieder schreiend aus der Show rausgelaufen bin. Sehr gut: vor der Show hat jemand sehr charmant - fast pantomimisch die Gäste aufgefordert, die zu eng zusammen saßen oder keine Masken aufhatten oder in Bereiche geleitet, die noch ziemlich leer waren. Außerdem wurde man vor Vorstellungsbeginn gebeten, sich die Sitzreihe zu merken. Wie auf unserem Lufthansa-Flug wurden wir dann Reihe für Reihe aufgefordert das Theater zu verlassen. Das hat super geklappt. Einfach vorbildlich!!! Die Kreuzfahrtdirektor stellt sich vor, aber da sie nicht in der Präsentation erwähnt wird (weil sie lt. Today we see our dancer, who guided us to the sea rescue exercise yesterday, on the stage. The fact that DO-RE-MI (MSC's kids program mascot) did not perform like at MSC PREZIOSA 2013 ensured that I didn't run out of the show screaming again. Very good: before the show, someone very charming - almost pantomimed - asked the guests who were sitting too close together or who were not wearing masks or leading into areas that were still pretty empty. In addition, you were asked to remember the row of seats before the performance began. As on our Lufthansa flight, we were asked row by row to leave the theater. That worked out great. Simply exemplary! The cruise director introduces herself, but since she is not mentioned in the presentation (because, according to the reception, she is not an officer), I, unfortunately, do not know her name. Unfortunately, on the third show, everything is different: it hardly matters where you sit. It does not matter if you have a mask on. It does not matter if you leave the line before the call. Too bad. A real shame.
