Tag/Day 9 nach der/after MSC SEASIDE in Fiumicino, Italy - Frankfurt, Germany

Auf zum Frühstück. Im Restaurant. Es gibt eigentlich einen abgetrennten Bereich für Executive Gäste, aber der wird für die Sitzkissen gebraucht. Wir kommen erst sehr spät zum Frühstück, da im Flughafen Lufthansa keine Lounge derzeit betreibt und wir in letzter Minute zum Terminal rüberwollen.



Let us go to breakfast, in the restaurant. There is actually a separate area for executive guests, but this is used for the seat cushions. We arrive very late for breakfast because Lufthansa currently has no lounge, and we want to go over to the terminal at the last minute.

Since we booked business class, the check-in was faster than expected. This fixed-price upgrade is worth it. So we go shopping a little longer: chocolate in the duty-free shop first. There are pianos everywhere that invite you to play. Some passengers also play on them. Here you can still take selfies with Roman backgrounds, even if you have not even left the airport. We drink a few more espressos and Cappuccini - the crew does that too - they treat themselves to a good coffee here. We see this sliced porchetta in the Chef Market. We have to have it and take a small portion (we asked to take half of it off the plate!). It is as delicious as it was yesterday in the Bistrot della Pigna in the Vatican. There is even still enough bread at home. And a tramezzino also has to be. I did not get it on the whole trip either. I will take it with me if there is not anything sensible on the plane or not enough... Lufthansa has to save. And another memory of Alitalia. Maybe next time, it will not even exist anymore. I already miss aviation history: Pan Am and Swissair.



Da wir Business Class gebucht haben, ging es doch schneller am Check-In als erwartet. Dieser Upgrade zum Festpreis lohnt sich. So gehen wir noch ein wenig shoppen: Schokolade zunächst im Duty Free Shop. Überall stehen Klaviere, die einen auffordern zu spielen. Sie werden auch von einigen Passagieren bespielt. Hier kann noch Selfies mit römischen Hintergründen machen, selbst man den Flughafen gar nicht verlassen hat. Wir trinken noch einige Espressi und Cappuccini - das macht die Crew auch - sie gönnt sich hier auch einen guten Kaffee. Im Chef Market sehen wir diesen aufgeschnittenen Porchetta. Den müssen wir doch haben und nehmen uns eine kleine Portion (wir hatten darum gebeten die Hälfte wieder vom Teller zu nehmen!). Der ist auch so lecker, wie gestern im Bistrot della Pigna im Vatikan. Es reicht sogar immer noch für ein Brot zu Hause. Und ein Tramezzino muss auch sein. Habe ich ja auf der ganzen Reise auch nicht bekommen. Ich nehme es mit, falls es im Flugzeug später nichts Vernünftiges gibt oder nicht reicht... Lufthansa muss ja sparen. Und noch ein Erinnerungen an Alitalia. Vielleicht gibt es sie beim nächsten Mal ja gar nicht mehr. Ich vermisse schon Luftfahrthistorie: Pan Am und Swissair.

Und dann gehen wir noch bei Venchi vorbei. Dieser Laden steht dort unmöglich - kurz vor unserem Gate! Man kommt an ihm nicht vorbei. Wir kaufen noch ein paar von denen, die wir an Bord von Valentina geschenkt bekommen haben: Nougatine.

When boarding the Lufthansa aircraft, the yellow sticker next to the door is immediately apparent. I notice the difference on the plane. The yellow part of the Lufthansa corporate identity is supposed to be the heartwarming one. It has probably turned a little more yellow again. I very well appreciate the campaign by our purser S. Zimmer #MyFaceBehindTheMask: As for support for the charitable Lufthansa initiative HelpAlliance, she suggested showing her face behind the mask. A lovely idea. A bit of a shame: we get almost the same food as on the outward flight. Despite the change of month and change of direction! There are other chocolates, but LSG Sky Chefs no longer exist, and apparently, they are not that creative with the new catering provider GateGourmet.



Beim Boarding der Lufthansa-Maschine fällt sofort der gelbe Aufkleber neben der Tür auf. Im Flugzeug bemerke ich den Unterschied. Der gelbe Anteil am Lufthansa Corperate Identity soll ja das herzerwärmende sein. Es ist wohl wieder etwas gelber geworden und die Aktion von unserem Purser S. Zimmer #MyFaceBehindTheMask kommt bei mir sehr gut an: Als Unterstützung für die karitative Lufthansa-Initiative HelpAlliance hat sie angeregt, ihr Gesicht hinter der Maske zu zeigen. Eine sehr sympathische Idee. Etwas schade: wir bekommen quasi dasselbe Essen wie auf dem Hinflug: trotz Monatswechsel und Richtungswechsel! Es gibt andere Pralinien, aber LSG Sky Chefs gibt es ja nicht mehr und anscheinend sind sie bei GateGourmet nicht so kreativ.

Beim Anflug auf Frankfurt gucke ich schon mal auf die EZB, die SkyLine von Frankfurt und das Viertel, in dem unser neues Büro ist: in Niederrad. Auch Brunos Büro ist hier. Bei einer Woche lohnt sich das Parken im Bürogebäude nicht. Die Parkkosten sind genauso hoch, wie zwei Taxifahrten hin und zurück.



When I approach Frankfurt, I look at the European Central Bank ECB, the SkyLine in Frankfurt, and the district in which our new office is: in Niederrad. Bruno's office is also here. Parking in the office building is not worthwhile for a week. The parking costs are just as high as two taxi rides there and back.

The arrival in Frankfurt is, as usual, on Lufthansa's home base crappy... Except for one gate: you cannot follow any further to the baggage claim in Terminal 1... Priority baggage delivery in Frankfurt with Priority: Lufthansa does not care about everything else that comes first. Only very annoying: the baggage carousel fails, and neither Lufthansa nor Fraport are interested. And the men's room in the baggage claim area is being converted. You have to leave the baggage hall, but you can probably go back in. A big dent in our brand new suitcase is noticed, but the dent is gone again when we get home. What kind of material is that?



Die Ankunft in Frankfurt läuft wie üblich auf Lufthansa Heimatbasis total besch... Bis auf ein Gate: noch weiter kann man gar nicht im Terminal 1 zur Gepäckausgabe folgen... Priority Gepäck in Frankfurt mit Priority ausliefern: interessiert Lufthansa nicht, dass alles andere zuerst kommt. Nur sehr ärgerlich: das Gepäckband fällt aus und weder Lufthansa noch Fraport interessieren sich dafür. Und die Herrentoilette in der Gepäckausgabe wird umgebaut. Man muss die Gepäckhalle verlassen, aber man darf wohl wieder rein. Eine dicke Delle in unserem nagelneuen Koffer fällt auf, aber als wir zu Hause ankommen, ist die Delle wieder weg. Was ist das denn für ein Material?

Zu Hause erwarten mich die passenden Socken, die ich geschenkt bekomme: Happy Sea!

And for the bus driver who brought my camera back to the terminal, I will send some money and a gift, and for the crew, I will send the photos to the port agent in Civitavecchia. Fortunately, I booked the proof of delivery: the parcels do not arrive until a fortnight later. I get a thank you email from hotel manager Luigi Tronfo. It is also unusual that a guest takes the trouble to send the pictures and remembers the crew in whatever way. Well: I'm the first to complain when something doesn't meet my expectations, but I am also the first to say publicly that it was great and that we had a great crew. I am looking forward to the next time with MSC in October 2021. To sail once again through the Giudecca Canal and see Venice from above. And Sonnendeck Seereisen got me aft cabins on deck 11: the perfect place.



Und für den Busfahrer, der mir meine Kamera zum Terminal zurückgebracht hat, schicke ich etwas Geld und ein Geschenk und für die Crew sende ich die Fotos an den Hafenagenten in Civitavecchia. Zum Glück habe ich den Auslieferungsnachweis dazugebucht: Die Päckchen kommen beide erst 14 Tage später an. Vom Hoteldirektor Luigi Tronfo bekomme ich ein Dankesmail. Für ihn ist es auch ungewöhnlich, dass ein Gast sich die Mühe macht, die Bilder zu senden und noch so sich an die Crew erinnert. Nun: ich bin der erste, der meckert, wenn etwas nicht meinen Erwartungen entspricht, aber ich bin auch der erste, der öffentlich sagt, dass es klasse war und wir eine tolle Crew hatten. Ich freue mich auf das nächste Mal mit MSC im Oktober 2021: Noch einmal durch den Giudecca-Kanal und Venedig von oben sehen. Und Sonnendeck Seereisen hat mir Heckkabinen auf Deck 11 besorgt: der perfekte Ort.

Tag/Day 8.2 auf der/on MSC SEASIDE in Civitavecchia, Italy - Rom/Rome, Italy

Wir kommen am Bahnhof Termini an. Aber wir müssen wieder ein Stückchen zurück zum Bahnhof Ostiense. Das bedeutet zum Zug nach Civitavecchia... und weiter in die Toskana. Noch 120 m bis zum passenden Gleis... dann noch 240 m bis zum Gleis... und dann noch 200 m bis zum Gleis... Zum Glück kann man den Weg wieder unten auf den Laufbändern zurücklegen.



We arrive at Termini station. But we have to go back a little way to Ostiense station. That means to the train to Civitavecchia, Italy... and on to Tuscany. Another 130 yards to the matching track... then another 262 yards to the track... and then another 219 yards to the track... Fortunately, you can walk the way back down on the moving walkways.

After a few minutes, we are back at Ostiense train station. We could also have taken the direct train from the airport. That would have been cheaper and faster, but it was not until we got on the train that we realized we were hungry.



Nach wenigen Minuten sind wir zurück am Bahnhof Ostiense. Wir hätten auch den direkten Zug vom Flughafen nehmen können. Das wäre billiger und schneller gewesen, aber erst im Zug stellten wir fest, dass wir Hunger hatten.

Am Bahnsteig kann man jetzt schon nicht-löslichen Kaffee im Automaten ziehen.

Dort kommen direkt vor EATALY aus. Wir kennen es ja von der MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017, MSC SEASIDE 2018 und VEENDAM 2019. Für mich ein Stück italienischer Himmel auf Erden in einem großen Gebäude. Natürlich gab es Kirschen, aber den ganzen Tag in der Hitze mitschleppen, wollten wir nicht. Weitere Erinnerungen an die MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 bzw. MSC SEASIDE 2018: Damals gab es an Bord noch die Produkte von Lurisia. Und später wieder an Land waren wir in der Essigproduktion von Giuseppe Giusti. Würden wir in München leben, wären wir vermutlich täglich da. Denn bei EATALY in München gibt es einen Verkauf von Venchi in Deutschland.



There come from right in front of EATALY. We know it from MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017, MSC SEASIDE 2018 and VEENDAM 2019. For me, a piece of Italian heaven on earth in a large building. Of course, there were cherries, but we didn't want to drag around in the heat all day. Further memories of the MSC MERAVIGLIA 2017 and MSC SEASIDE 2018: At that time, there were still Lurisia products on board. And later, back ashore, we were with Giuseppe Giusti's vinegar production. If we lived in Munich, Germany, we would probably be there every day. Because at EATALY in Munich there is a sale of Venchi in Germany.

Unfortunately, not all restaurants are open for lunch. So we go to the pizzeria again, but pizzas at EATALY are just too good. We still share the starters. Only the dessert is too sweet for me. In keeping with the philosophy, there is only Mole Cola from Italy. Also interesting to see: Contact tracking is not only available in Germany.



Leider haben nicht alle Restaurants mittags geöffnet. So gehen wir wieder in die Pizzeria, aber Pizza bei EATALY sind einfach zu gut. Wir teilen uns noch die Vorspeisen. Nur der Nachtisch ist mir zu süß. Hier gibt es passend zur Philosophie nur Mole Cola aus Italien. Auch interessant zu sehen: Kontaktverfolgung gibt es nicht nur in Deutschland.

Wir kämpfen mal wieder mit der Fahrkarte für die U-Bahn, aber für uns gilt nicht die Seite mit dem Barcode, sondern nur mit dem Magnetstreifen.

Cipro used to be the closest metro station to get to the Vatican Museums. Here we get out: the easiest thing to do now would be to go up the stairs and then back down along the wall.



Früher wurde Cipro als nächster U-Bahnhof genannt, um zu den Vatikanischen Museen zu kommen. Hier steigen wir aus: am einfachsten wäre es jetzt die Treppe rauf und dann wieder entlang der Mauer runterzulaufen.

Wir sind wieder da. Aber es ist so leer, dass wir einfach die Chance uns nicht entgehen lassen können, nochmals hierher zu kommen. Zum Pride-Monat gibt es sogar einen Regenbogen auf den Gemälden. Die Apotheke hat leider geschlossen. Auch können nicht die Plakate mit den Deckengemälden kaufen. Viele Verkaufstände sind leider nicht besetzt. Wir bekommen einen Audioguide, der in unserem Happy Hour Arrangement inkludiert sind. Obwohl nichts los ist, wir werden nicht sehr viel eher reingelassen. Wir waren ja damals vor der OCEAN PRINCESS 2010-Reise hier, aber da wurden wir nur durchgeschoben, ohne dass wir Zeit hatten, mal stehen zu bleiben und die Deckengemälde aufzunehmen und zu genießen.



We are back. But it is so empty that we just cannot miss the chance to come back here again. There is even a rainbow on the paintings for Pride month. The pharmacy is unfortunately closed. You can also not buy posters with ceiling paintings. Unfortunately, many stalls are not occupied. We get an audio guide, which is included in our Happy Hour arrangement. Even though nothing is going on, we are not very much let in. We were here before the OCEAN PRINCESS 2010 trip, but we were only pushed through without having time to stop and take in the ceiling paintings and enjoy.

The chart room is fascinating: we recognize many ports and cities. It is interesting how it looked then and how it still looks today.

Endlich Rafael "nur" für mich! Ich muss dabei an Woody Allens "To Rome with Love" denken. Penélope Cruz in der Rolle als Prostituierte Anna während einer Führung. Jemand aus der Familie sagt: "Die ganze Zeit auf dem Rücken liegen und arbeiten? Das kann man sich gar nicht vorstellen." Und Anna entgegnet: "Ich mir schon!"



Finally, Rafael "only" for me! I have to think of Woody Allen's "To Rome with Love". Penélope Cruz in the role of prostitute Anna during a tour. Someone in the family says, "Can you imagine working all that time on your back?" And Anna replies: "I can."

There is also a section with contemporary art. I immediately discover a sculpture that looks familiar to me. It seems like the German artist Ernst Barlach and is Ernst Barlarch.

Because there are only a few visitors to the Sistine Chapel, it is bright. You cannot feel the breath or the warmth of other visitors. I can turn 360° with my arms outstretched, and I do not touch anyone. Unfortunately, there are so many security guards that they pay attention to any misconduct. Then we see these pictures, which give an impression of when papal elections take place here.



Weil nur wenige Besucher in der Sistinischen Kapelle sind, ist es hell. Man spürt nicht den Atem und die Wärme anderer Besucher. Ich kann mich um 360° mit ausgebreiteten Armen drehen und berühre niemanden. Leider sind soviele Sicherheitsleute da, dass sie wirklich auf jede Verfehlung achten. Danach sehen wir diese Bilder, die einen Eindruck vermitteln, wenn Papstwahlen hier stattfinden.

Wie gesagt: wir waren schon mal hier, aber damals wurden wir nur durchgeschoben und hatten keine Chance mal stehen zu bleiben und das zu fotografieren.



As I said, we have been here before, but we were just pushed through and had no chance to stop and take pictures back then.

We have to go back to the pine court. Here is also the sculpture Sphere within Sphere of Arnaldo Pomodoro, which we already admired in the hotel. We are lucky: the globes move into each other. One of the tour guides gets them going while she explains something to their group.



Wir müssen zurück zum Pinienhof. Hier ist auch die Skulptur Sphere within Sphere Arnaldo Pomodoro, die wir bereits im Hotel bewundert haben. Wir haben Glück: die Kugeln bewegen sich ineinander. Eine der Fremdenführerinnen bringt sie zum Laufen, während sie ihrer Gruppe etwas erklärt.

Wir machen eine weitere Runde im Museum. Sobald alle geimpft sind und wieder reisen dürfen: so werden wir es nie wieder erleben. Dass wir beispielsweise schaffen über den Dächern von Rom zu sehen. Sonst wären wir vermutlich direkt an den Fenstern weitergeschoben worden.



We do another round in the museum. As soon as everyone is vaccinated and allowed to travel again, we will never see it again. That we, for example, manage to see over the roofs of Rome. Otherwise, the other visitors would have probably pushed us right next to the windows.

The highlight of this arrangement: a dinner with the Pope... that is how I understood it! An antipasti plate with wine and water is served in the Bistrot della Pigna. The Happy Hour meal arrangement would have cost 17.00 EUR if we had ordered it à la carte in the restaurant. But we don't get any sweet things as it says on the menu. The food is ok - Lots of fresh food from the deep fryer. The porchetta is delicious! But it was nice to sit here in the pine yard in the evening sun and just enjoy.



Der Höhepunkt dieses Arrangements: ein Abendessen mit dem Papst... so hatte ich das verstanden! Es wird eine Antipasti-Teller mit Wein und Wasser im Bistrot della Pigna serviert. Das Happy Hour Essensarrangement hätte 17,00 EUR gekostet, wenn wir es à-la-carte im Restaurant bestellt werden. Aber wir bekommen keine süßen Sachen, wie auf der Speisekarte steht. Das Essen ist o.k. - sehr viel frisches aus der Fritteuse. Sehr lecker ist das Porchetta! Aber es war schön in der Abendsonne hier im Pinienhof zu sitzen und einfach zu genießen.

Da wir später im Hotel kein Leckerli im Bett haben, genießen wir dankbar das Geschenk von Valentina von Venchi auf der MSC SEASIDE, bevor wir schlafen. Und sie hat Recht: nichts geschmolzen und immer noch lecker.



Since we will not have any treats in bed later in the hotel, we gratefully enjoy the present from Valentina von Venchi on the MSC SEASIDE before we go to sleep. And she is right: nothing melted and still tasty.
